2013 Playoffs - Recap
10/6/2013 5:12:14 PM

The sun was a bit scared to come out on Sunday to watch the finals as the Minnesota twins were facing the Chicago white sox.

It was Minnesota who changed their team around from last year in hopes for a better outcome than last year's loss in the finals.

It was Minnesota who's bats came out early and often putting up runs in every inning while Chicago could only muster up 1 good inning.

Minnesota won game 1 by a score of 16-5.

Chicago was poised to take this to game 3 but Minnesota had other ideas. Both teams came out swinging and it was an entertaining affair with 9 home runs being hit.

The turning point came in the 7th inning with 2 outs Minnesota hit a high pop fly to Chicago's pitcher who called everyone off only to miss it and the ball ended foul. The next pitch lead to a 3 run homerun followed by a few more runs before the inning was over.

With Chicago down 10 runs everyone thought it was an impossible hill to climb. Chicago mounted a comeback with consistent hitting only to put up 7 runs falling a bit short.

Minnesota wins the high scoring affair 26-23 and winning this year's USBA Championship

Congratulations to the 2013 USBA Champion Minnesota.

2013 All Star Game - October 5th
10/2/2013 2:17:25 PM

All Star Game Recap

The sun didn't co-operate with us but the weather was still nice enough to play.  With both teams trying to show each other which Teir rains supreme it was Teir 1 who came out on top 26-24 in an 9 inning affair.

We removed the homerun rule and everyone was thankful as the Jakd bats came out and bombs were being hit to left right and centre.  It seemed with everybody's mind focussed on hitting the defence was left on the back burner.  Picking an MVP with so many players performing well was very difficult.  This year it was given to Sonu Sikand who was representing (Teir 1 Phillies) who ended up taking the award cause he decided to bring out his gold glove and play amazing defence to go with his home run power.

Thank you all for coming out and we hope you had a great time.

Homerun Derby Recap

Winner - Irfan Desai (HOU)

2013 Year end tournament - Winners
9/11/2013 7:26:06 AM
Unlike Saturday, Sunday's Tournament was a great day of ball.

With Arizona having fate slip through their fingers in the last inning of the regular season, most thought they were the odds on favourite to win the tournament. Every game was close with teams fighting to play another week it was Baltimore, San Diego, Washington, and Arizona who made it through to the semi finals.

With Baltimore and San Diego battling it out it was a sea saw battle with both teams taking the lead on numerous occasions. Going into the last inning, Baltimore had a 1 run lead only to have SD rally to put up 3 runs and take the lead.  Going into the bottom of the 7th Baltimore was determined to take the game back but if it wasn't for the heroics of SD 3rd baseman (Keon) robbing them twice to preserve the win.

With Washington upsetting the D-Backs, the stage was set for the final spot.

Washington and SD

Congratulations Washington on Winning this year's Tournament.

Good luck in the playoffs.

Tier 1 Tournament:

With only 6 teams competiting for the Teir 1 tourney it was going to be a close affair.

With Pittsburgh and Boston opening up the festivities it was a classic battle with both teams loaded with speed and consistent hitting.  Boston lead most of the game but Pittsburgh kept hanging in there only to take the lead and never surrender it.

With Oakland versus Chicago up next, it was a close affair with Oakland tying it up in the top of the 7th only to have Chicago squeak out a victory with their last at bats.

The Twins were anxiously waiting the arrival of Pittsburgh and once the game started Pittsburgh had a hard time keeping up with Minnesota's offense.

The finals had Chicago and the Twins.

With it set to be a classic battle of speed and defence the Sox had a bit more juice left in the tank and pulled out to take the victory.

Congrats to the WHITE SOX for being the 2013 Tier 1 Tourney Champions!

2012 USBA FINALS: CLEVELAND VS. PHILADELPHIA
10/9/2012 12:26:21 PM

Game 1:

It was a cold start to the championship game between the Cleveland Indians and the Philadelphia Phillies. Game 1 was a slug fest, both teams exchanging runs after runs. The Phillies made timely errors allowing the Indians to stay within striking distance all game until the Indians tied it up and sent it to extra innings. Both teams set a record by extending the game 3 extra innings until finally in the 10th inning, the Indians prevailed and took victory after a hard fought battle. The game was a seesaw battle, the Indians would put up a run in the top and the Phillies would match and send it to another extra inning, the Indians were blanked in one inning and the Phillies just needed one run to take game one but Indians blanked the Phillies. A great start to the championship but on to game 2 with the Indians leading the series 1-0.

Game 2:

Game 2 saw the Indians dominate early and pull ahead. The Phillies were on their heels for much of the game as they had not lost 2 straight games all year. The veteran team of the Phillies stuck around all game and finally took the lead late in the game, coincidentally following the first appearance of the championship trophy on the bleachers. They felt relaxed until the bottom of the 7th. With the Phillies up by 2 runs and 2 men on and one of the hottest batters for the Indians up to bat, crowd chanting “walk off homerun”, the Phillies remained calm and cool and ended the game winning by 2 runs and forcing a 3rd and decisive game for the USBA championship.

Game 3:

With the confidence growing for the Phillies and the Indians now with their backs against the wall, both teams rushed onto the field to start game 3. The Indians looked noticeably nervous and were even more worried after the Phillies lead 5-0 after the first inning. The Indians followed up a must score inning by piling on 5 of their own but the Phillies answered with another 5 in the bottom of the 2nd. Leading 10-5, the Phillies did what they do all season, put it in cruise control, BUT wait, these are the Indians. They are in the finals for a reason, Indians chipped away, adding a run here, a run there until ultimately tying the game in the 6th. In the bottom half of the 6th, the Phillies smacked a 3 run homerun to take the lead heading into the top of the 7th. With two runs already in and the Phillies leading by a single run and the game tying run on base, the Phillies ended the Indians season on a ground out and celebrated winning the championship by a single run in game 3 of the finals. Phillies win series 2-1.

This was one of the most exciting, intense and longest finals in recent memory. Congrats to a hard fought finals by the Indians. They fought hard and kept up the fight throughout the game but fell 1 run short.

Congratulations to the Philadelphia Phillies, the 2012 USBA Champions. This is the first time in history that a single team has won the Triple Crown, 1st overall in the regular season, Knockout Tourney Champions and ultimately, USBA Champions.

The committee would like to thank all volunteers, managers and players for their dedication and commitment throughout the season. You all made this another successful campaign and we hope that you will continue to enjoy your Sundays as much as we have. Please stay tuned for the end of the season banquet, to be held in early 2013.

Have a safe, happy and busy off season!

2012 Year end tournament - Sunday, Sept. 9th
9/5/2012 4:04:41 PM

Teir 2 - Summary

With all playoff hope riding on this tournament all teams were poised to make one last push for post-season play.  With Chicago battling through tough opponents in  Baltimore and San Diago only to face the New York Yankees who had no small feat getting to the finals.  The finals was one for the record books with both teams having the chance to take the championship.  Late in the game Chicago hits a 3 run shot only to have it called back cause the runner touches home plate forcing the 3rd out ending the inning.  Going into the bottom of the 8th inning with 1 out and 1 runner on base.  Ravi hits a shot to the fence only to be robbed by Dave with an unbelievable catch.  With the next batter walking Dwayne singles to score 2 runs to end the game.

Congrats Yankees!!! You are the Teir 2 Knockout Tourny Champs and the 12th seeded team in the playoffs.

Teir 1 - Summary

The day brought crowds of teams as spectators as well as competitors. In the random draw, the first round saw a match up where Presidents Trophy winners Philadelphia took on Cleveland. Cleveland was riding the feat of being the only team in the league to sweep the season series against Philadelphia. But this time around, strong defence coupled with great pitching saw Philadelphia win and advance to the next round. The L.A. Dodgers were on quest to repeat as champs and eliminated Pittsburgh in the first round and then moved on to knock out mighty Atlanta in the second round to make it back to the finals. Philadelphia eliminated Chicago in the second round to setup a match against the L.A. Dodgers in the finals.

The L.A. Dodgers and the Phillies had to battle it out and when all the smoke cleared, the Philadelphia Phillies were declared Tier 1 Knockout Tourney Champs!

8/7/2012 2:40:16 PM
USBA Members,

Many teams have expressed concerns with the lack of players who will be present during the games on Sunday Aug.19th due to the religious holiday.  Many teams will not be able to field a team so we the committee have decided to move all games played on that day to Saturday August 25th 2012. The schedule, time slots, and playing field will remain the same.

We thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,

2012 All Star Game & HR Derby - Recap
7/4/2012 1:14:20 PM
USBA members,

What a great weekend it was full of countless home runs, good food and an amazing game.  As the sun was beating down hard on all the players in the home run derby our guys managed to keep pounding them out of the yard.

We had many  guys competing for that grand prize of Home Run Champ and it was a close race with Mustafa Hashimi and Shawn Brown making it to the final 2.  It was a battle with Mustafa coming out on top and being crowned HR Derby Champ.

Congrats Mustafa.  I'm sure that Cleveland hopes that you continue that production.

As the All Stars began to pile in it was to be a battle that nobody thought would even be close.  Everyone thought that Teir 1 players would crush the Teir 2 team but nobody told that to the Teir 2 guys.  With the Teir 1 taking a commanding lead only to have Teir 2 come back and nearly win the game.  With the final score being 26-22 it was a tight affair.

Thanks for everyone coming out and supporting the day and we hope that everyone had a great time.

Sincerely,
USBA Committee

St. Louis Cardinals - 2011 USBA Champions

St Louis Cardinals Win the USBA Championship!

2011 USBA Champions

What turned out to be a beautiful Thanksgiving Sunday also brought the two remaining teams – the San Diego Padres and St Louis Cardinals- to the field for the Championship Game showdown.

Leading up to the finals the Padres defeated Colorado Rockies who had defeated the defending champs Houston Astros in the 1st round.

The Cardinals took the scenic route to the finals; as they took on the ever so resilient Tier 2 Tournament Champions, the Arizona D-Backs and qualified themselves for a position in the playoffs. Game 1 led The Cardinals to face off against the high ranking Dodgers who finished the season 2nd overall thanks to an intense team effort. Matched against a relentless offensive attack lead by the Dodgers, the lowly Cardinals gave up the win with little to no energy. After the Game 1 thrashing, the Cardinals weren’t about to take defeat lying down as they came back in Games 2 and 3 of the series to triumph over the Dodgers.

In Round 3, the Cardinals faced the scrappy and fundamentally sound Indians, who once again finished 1st overall for the 2nd straight year (congratulations Indians!). Slow to start off in the 1st game the Cardinals took a pounding, only to come back strong in the 2nd game with home field advantage. The Cardinals continued to battle as they waited for the bats to come alive, relying on their defence to carry them to a victory. The match was won with a “Cardinals-esque” come back victory in the last inning as they ultimately scored 10 runs in the 7th to suck the life out of the Indians’ dugout which in turn eliminated them from the playoffs for a 2nd straight year- much like they did with the Dodgers last season.

The Finals brought the revamped and confident Padres to face the Cardinals who have now advanced to the Championships 3 straight years, all with the new formidable nucleus. The Cardinals meant business this time around and Game 1 was met with great intensity from both sides. The Cardinals developed a new found dedication to getting on base versus aiming for the fences. This newly accepted team philosophy propelled the Cardinals to win the series in just 2 games (partly due to some suspect defence by the Padres).

Congratulations to the Padres and the entire league for a smooth drama free season and congratulations goes out to the Cardinals for winning their second championship in 3 years!

2011 Year End Tournament
9/12/2011 3:04:55 PM

Tier 1 Tournament

This years Tier 1 Championship was played by the LA Dodgers, and the Colorado Rockies.  Both teams had never made a trip to the tournament Championship game, and were both excited to have the ability to add some new hardware to their team history.

The Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants in game one by a slim margin, and then were given a free pass to the finals via forfeit by the San Diego Padres.

For the Rockies, they had to take a very different route to the finals. It meant going through last years tournament champion St.Louis in game one, and then beating last years playoff champions the Houston Astros in game two.

A showdown between the Dodgers, and the Rockies was set for the finals.

Both teams had defense as their first priority, but with Colorado leading by 1 at the end of the 4th inning, it was their defense that was the first to budge.  They made a couple of critical errors in the last two innings, and the Dodgers took advantage of these chances with smart and powerful hitting. LA took the lead for good in the 5th inning and never looked back to win their first Tier 1 Championship.

Congratulations to the LA Dodgers for winning the Tier 1 Trophy, and to all the teams who participated in this years exciting tournament.
LA Dodgers - Tier 1 Tournament Champions

Tier 2 Tournament

The D-backs road to the playoffs has been overdue but expected for the last few years. Unfortunately this year was looking familiar, mainly due to a few unfortunate losses in the regular season that played a factor in landing them comfortably in the standings. The Diamondbacks found themselves 1”W” shy of finishing in the top 8 and a guaranteed berth.

Now, being forced to take the Wildcard route, they found themselves in the semis facing a familiar foe; in The Mariners. The Mariners who had previously eliminated them in the 2010 Tournament, and to boot, Arizona was 0-2 against their rivals in 2011. Right off the bat, this was a see-saw battle as time constraints were also a factor. The game did however manage to get through seven innings and with loads of spectators on hand, the nerves on both benches became apparent. With men on and 2 outs, The Mariners batter popped up in foul territory to end the game. The Diamondbacks prevailed by just a single run, and were now moving onto the Finals.

As the daylight was dwindling, The Diamondbacks were making their way to the South Field, where The Marlins awaited anxiously. Right from the get go The Marlins meant business. They came out gunning with 3 Homeruns in 2 innings to take an 8-1 lead. The Diamondbacks were down but not out, they answered back with stellar defense; including a couple of heroic catches by Nilam and Faiz in the OF, that kept The Marlins at bay. Meanwhile the bats were coming alive, lead by Nabeel, the game was in a deadlock at 9-9 going into the 7th. In the top of the inning however, The Marlins scored 5 to take a commanding lead, and were now just 3 outs away from sealing their victory. However Arizona had other plans. With the score now 14-13, thanks to timely hitting and an inside-the-park base clearing homerun by Rayhaan, Arizona found themselves in a bit of trouble. Down to their final out with runners on 2nd and 3rd; Hardeep was in the batter’s box. With the count 1-0 he hit a hard single up the middle to clear the bags for a 15-14 walk-off victory, the tournament trophy, a playoff berth and a date with The Cardinals in the first round.
